In Poul Anderson's 1971 novel Operation Chaos, the protagonists are visited shortly after being married by a succubus/incubus who changes genders in its attempts to seduce both of them.Greenfield's 1970 novel Succubus has the ancient demon hitching a ride on a woman marrying an archeologist Richard Matheson's 1962 short story "The Likeness of Julie" portrays a teenage succubus named Julie (later adapted into the TV film Trilogy of Terror).Charles Williams's 1937 novel Descent into Hell portrays an academic who consciously rejects the potential affections of a real woman in favor of a physically identical but perfectly obedient and pliable succubus.Honoré de Balzac's early 1800s short story " The Succubus" concerns a 1271 trial of a she- devil succubus in the guise of a woman, who, amongst other things, could use her hair to entangle victims.Thomas Middleton's 1605 play A Mad World, My Masters, the philandering Master Penitent Brothel is tempted by a succubus assuming the form of his illicit partner, using song and dance in a failed attempt to seduce him. Similar legends of Kawahime is also said to be found, not only in Fukuoka Prefecture, but in Kouchi and OOita Prefecture as well in some cases describing her as a Kappa instead of a water spirit with a perfectly human appearance.The Succubus, 1889 sculpture by Auguste Rodin Thus, the old man explained that the beautiful woman was in fact Kawahime and any men who’s naive enough to approach her after being seduced would get all their vigor removed from their body. After the beautiful woman left, the young villagers asked the old man why he prevented them from talking to her. When the young villagers tried to talk to her, an old man came out from the watermill house and hinted them to ignore her. Seiko Iwaidou as Kawahime in “ Youkai-daisensou”Īccording to the legend of Kawahime from Chikujō District (Fukuoka Prefecture), recorded in “Minkan-denshō Yōkai-mei’i” (1939) by Yōshū Mizuno (1883-1947), when a group of young male villager gathered around a watermill to work a beautiful young woman appeared from behind the watermill. In contrast, however, her original legend from Fukuoka Prefecture depicts Kawahime as a dreadful entity who possess similar characteristics to a Succubus. Kawahime or sometimes known as Kawa-onago “River Woman” “regained” her popularity when she appeared in the movie “Youkai-daisensou” (2005) directed by Takashi Mi’ike (1960-present) as a pro-protagonist character played by actress Seiko Iwaidou (1984-present).
